Reports are circulating about AMD's upcoming RDNA 4 "Navi 4x" GPUs, suggesting a significant departure from the current trend. Allegedly, the RDNA 4 lineup will not feature any "high-end GPUs," a shift from the RDNA 3 architecture's emphasis on "ultra-enthusiast cards." The move appears to be a strategic effort by AMD to prioritize the mid-range segment and potentially regain lost market share.

AMD introduced the RDNA 3 architecture last year with the Radeon RX 7900 series, categorized as the ultra-enthusiast lineup. This included models like the RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX, which competed directly against Nvidia's RTX 4070/Ti and RTX 4080. Additionally, AMD launched the more budget-friendly RX 7600 based on the same RDNA 3 architecture, showcasing a 54 percent performance-per-watt improvement compared to RDNA 2.

With the forthcoming RDNA 4 architecture, AMD seems poised to employ a different approach. Notable leaker @Kepler_L2, who has a history of reliable leaks, conveyed on Twitter that the Navi 4x lineup will forego high-end GPUs, diverging from the likes of RDNA 1 and Polaris generations. While this information is said to originate from multiple sources, it remains unofficial, warranting cautious consideration.

During the RDNA 1 generation, AMD's Navi 10 GPUs lacked a high-end offering, setting them apart from subsequent Navi 31 and Navi 33 GPUs. In retrospect, AMD's Radeon RX 6000 series provided SKUs across Nvidia's range, spanning entry-level to high-end options. The RDNA 3 GPUs similarly refrained from introducing a "Big Ferocious GPU" counterpart to Nvidia's RTX 4090 in the Radeon 7000 series lineup, indicative of a targeted strategy.

The speculated shift to focus on the mid-range with RDNA 4 appears driven by the intention to capture a larger market share in this segment, which enjoys significant popularity. Anticipated to roll out next year, RDNA 4 will introduce Radeon 8000 series graphics cards, presumably skewed toward mid-range offerings. However, AMD's EVP of Computing & Graphics Business Group, Rick Bergman, has previously indicated that RDNA 4 will yield even higher performance, affirming that mid-range offerings could potentially surpass the previous generation's high-end counterparts in terms of performance.

Although the future of AMD's RDNA 3.5 GPUs, intended for iGPUs, is being observed, it is projected to be integrated into the Ryzen 8000 CPU and APU series. Leaks have hinted that RDNA 3.5 might deliver performance akin to Nvidia's RTX 3070, combining elements of both RDNA 3 and RDNA 4 architectures, with a stronger foundation in RDNA 3 technology.
