The Minecraft developers at Mojang have made the decision to leave the game's largest subreddit after a viral announcement on June 27. This move comes shortly after the subreddit was flooded with John Oliver imagery. Reddit is set to implement a new developer policy on July 1, which will involve charging third-party apps for accessing its API. The specific details of these policy changes have sparked widespread protests across the platform. Many developers, moderators, and users have criticized the proposed rates of $0.24 per 1,000 API requests as unreasonable and potentially malicious. As a result, popular third-party clients like Reddit is Fun and Apollo have decided to shut down, and numerous subreddits have taken actions to protest the changes.

The main Minecraft team has now decided to leave Reddit, citing the site-wide turmoil as the primary reason for their departure. Consequently, the developers responsible for the Java Edition of Minecraft will no longer post changelogs on the platform. Mikael "SlicedLime" Hedberg, the team's tech lead, clarified that this decision was made internally and should not be seen as an official policy applying to the rest of Mojang, Xbox Game Studios, or Microsoft. Minecraft fans who want to share their opinions with the game's developers following their departure from Reddit can still do so through alternate channels.

Hedberg recommended using the contact form available at feedback.minecraft.net. While most fans expressed their approval of the move, a few speculated that it was a reaction to the loosening moderation of r/Minecraft as a protest against the impending API changes. However, Hedberg dismissed this notion, stating that the moderators did not cause their decision. Furthermore, the Minecraft Java Edition team did not discuss the possibility of returning to Reddit if the platform were to roll back or revise its policy changes. Hedberg emphasized that they would address that situation if it arises. Currently, the likelihood of such a reversal appears low, especially considering Reddit's recent crackdown on protests, which has involved the removal of some moderators who were overseeing public pushback against the impending API policy.
